Disrespect by Turkish Airlines Cabin Chief During Medical Emergency
Today, upon landing in Rome with the 08:15 THY Istanbul-Rome flight, an elderly passenger vomited and lost consciousness. Being right behind the passenger, I intervened, stating that I am a doctor. I gave the patient cherry juice and water, thinking their blood sugar had dropped, as they also had diabetes. The patient regained consciousness, and only then did the cabin chief arrive. Upon arrival, the first thing the chief did was question my medical expertise and, unsatisfied with my response, demanded to see my doctor ID in a very disrespectful manner. I explained that I didn't have it on me and reiterated that I am a doctor, as is my spouse. The chief then accused me of being too harsh. It became clear that the chief was more concerned with my demeanor than the patient's emergency. Firstly, the cabin chief only arrived after the patient regained consciousness. Secondly, a patient who has vomited and is unconscious could aspirate or fall into a coma due to low blood sugar. In my haste to help the patient, I requested cherry juice and water purely out of medical reflex, without considering my tone. However, I was met with extreme rudeness and no apology was offered afterward. While I am accustomed to the egotistical behavior of THY employees, I cannot accept the disrespect shown to me after ensuring the patient's well-being. I demand that the necessary warning be given to the cabin chief in question, reserving my legal rights. As a doctor who already faces enough violence, I will not tolerate this psychological abuse and will pursue every possible action. I am informing your institution via this complaint platform.
