I'm concerned about the privacy of my messages when using WhatsApp. How safe is it?

WhatsApp is thought to be a safe messaging app, especially when compared to other similar apps. Users should be aware of the privacy features' limits, though, and take steps to protect their privacy, like turning on two-factor authentication and being careful in group chats.

• End-to-end encryption is used by WhatsApp to make sure that your messages stay encrypted from the time they are sent until they reach their destination. Because of this strong privacy feature, not even WhatsApp can read the messages. Additionally, users can choose to have messages "disappear" after a certain amount of time. This adds an extra layer of privacy.

• Also, two-factor authentication makes your WhatsApp account safer by requiring a second code to log in, even if someone knows your password. But it's important to know that even though the content of your messages is encrypted, metadata is still collected. This includes information about who you're messaging, when you're messaging them, and how long they last.

It's important to know what the limits are. End-to-end encryption only works for one-on-one chats, not group chats where all messages can be seen by administrators. Chats that are backed up by default in the cloud could be vulnerable if someone got into them without permission and decrypted the messages.
