Turkish Airlines Charged Extra Money for Seating 6-Year-Old Passenger Next to Her Mother
Almost a month before my journey, I booked two tickets from Istanbul to Edremit and returned using enuygun.com. I did the online check-in for both flights using the link provided a day earlier. While the first trip with my six-year-old daughter went smoothly, with automatically allocated seats, the second flight's online check-in proved problematic. Despite an automatically assigned unoccupied seat next to me, my six-year-old, who is not allowed to travel alone, was given a different seat in the back. For an additional fee of ₺75, passengers could select an adjacent seat. Customer service agents were unhelpful, suggesting I try again four hours before my trip. If I was unable to book nearby seats online, I was urged to seek assistance from airport personnel, assuming they were available. The objective of online check-in is to reduce time and make the process easier for passengers, particularly those with small children and carry-on bags.
Customer agents do not have the authority to create a complaint record; we can only provide feedback through the system. According to the response to my feedback, I could only change seats for a cost because I purchased an eco fly ticket rather than an extrafly or primefly package. Demanding ₺1 to seat a six-year-old next to her mother on a plane is immoral, regardless of flight restrictions.
I paid 75 TL so that my 6-year-old daughter could sit in the empty seat next to me. Can you believe the absurdity of this sentence? When the representative I emailed for the second time again told me that this situation was an automatic result of the system and that they couldn't change it, I tried the online check-in process again. The first time, the screen didn't show a fee for the seats I selected side by side, but when I clicked continue, it showed 75 TL. I tried this multiple times, and it always went from 0.00 TL at the first stage to 75 TL later. Then, the system moved my daughter to another seat 12 rows behind me. Realizing that I couldn't deal with an AI that is after every penny, I bought the seat. Congratulations THY, shame on you.
