Third-party booking platforms make rebooking non-refundable reservations difficult. After processing your reservation, the third-party company pays the hotel for the room.
If you cancel your reservation, you're usually charged immediately because these fees were collected at booking. The third-party platform cancels the hotel reservation. The hotel may not have received its share of the payment depending on when you booked.
Canceling your reservation frees up the room for other guests, but the hotel doesn't know if you'll stay. If all rooms are taken, the hotel may charge you for a new one. Even if they gave you a room for free, the third-party travel site would have to pay the hotel.
In such cases, apologize for any errors, express your desire to stay at the hotel, and politely request a credit from the canceled reservation for a new stay. Personal understanding and goodwill often matter. Human sympathy can be powerful, so let the General Manager respond. If all goes well, you may but the chances are quite low.
