Turkish Airlines Charged Me €37 Despite Meeting My Total Luggage Allowance
Before our Turkish Airlines flight from Thessaloniki to Istanbul at 21:45 local time on November 16, 2024, during check-in, Turkish Airlines requested an extra fee of €37 because I had purchased three pieces of 23 kg luggage in advance. When I handed over two suitcases weighing 30 kg and 21 kg in total, they charged me because one suitcase exceeded the 23 kg limit. This policy makes no sense. I had a total of 69 kg, which matches the allowance I purchased, so why charge extra just because the weight distribution between the suitcases was uneven? To add to the confusion, they sell 32 kg luggage options, and since I carried the bags myself, there should not be a transportation issue. For comparison, I flew to Thessaloniki from Düsseldorf with Aegean Airlines, where I purchased two pieces of 23 kg luggage and was not charged any extra fees. On top of this, a friend of mine recently lost his luggage on a Düsseldorf flight, and he is also pursuing a resolution with Turkish Airlines. This experience left us humiliated as we had to open one of our suitcases at the airport and scatter our belongings around to redistribute the weight. Turkish Airlines, there are better ways to handle customer service and policies. With platforms like Google Flights offering transparent ticket options, charging extra for situations like this feels exploitative. This kind of treatment is unacceptable, and I regret having to endure such unnecessary inconvenience.
