On September 21, I made a reservation for 31 days (10/08/2023 to 11/08/2023) at Oliwka Hostel in Poland with confirmation number 412...62. This reservation was intended for my son applying for his university visa for his future stay. We provided our card details during the reservation. The free cancellation period ended on 10/06/2023 at midnight.
As we did not receive the visa on time, we waited until the last minute. Due to my hospitalization and notification emails accidentally landing in the spam folder, I checked my credit card statement on 10/08 and discovered that 16,050 TL was debited on 10/04 through my Garanti Bank credit card for 31 days.
On the same day, I canceled through Booking and informed the hotel that we could not come due to the visa delay. I requested a refund of the total amount or reimbursement for the first day if the hotel insisted. I also contacted Booking customer service to explain the situation and our reasons for the cancellation. They assured me that they would contact the hotel.
The next day, the hotel stated they could not provide a refund but could postpone the reservation for 6 months. We explained that we reserved the room for educational purposes, did not receive the visa, and could not come in 6 months due to changed plans.
The hotel then began referring us to Booking, claiming we had not purchased anything. Booking customer service declined the cancellation, stating they would implement the hotel's decision. Ultimately, both sides pass the responsibility to each other, burdening us with the costs for the unused 31 days in the hotel, alleging a penalty for a late cancellation of only 36 hours. It is regrettable that we have no one to defend our rights.
