Agoda Hotel Reservations Misleading Reviews and Poor Conditions

Since 2019, I’ve relied exclusively on Agoda for my trips to East Asia, recommending it to friends for its user-friendly app and competitive pricing. However, my recent trip to Malaysia turned into a nightmare due to Agoda’s misleading reviews and photos. I booked rooms in three different hotels in Kuala Lumpur, trusting the highly-rated reviews.
The first hotel, chosen for its proximity to the airport, was nothing like described. While the luxury branch of the hotel nearby had glowing reviews, we were sent to a substandard facility barely worth a single star. At 2 a.m., we arrived at a dark, unsafe area. The room was infested with ants; by morning, both the bed and luggage were overrun. The noise throughout the night was unbearable, with guests shouting in the corridors.
The third hotel was even worse, marketed as a two-star establishment. The narrow hallways led to filthy, cramped rooms occupied by numerous men. The room reeked of mold, pillows were mildewed, and dirty water dripped from the ceiling above the toilet. My daughter and I, alone and vulnerable, felt completely unsafe. Despite requesting to leave without a refund, every other option showed similarly glowing reviews on Agoda, yet Google revealed the truth—countless others had experienced the same discrepancies.
I’m heartbroken not only for myself but especially for my daughter, who summed up our ordeal by saying, “Mom, God saved us from there.” This is unacceptable. Agoda must take responsibility for verifying reviews and photos. I demand immediate action to prevent others from facing such dangerous and distressing situations.
