On May 29, 2023, my United + Sunexpress flight from Newark to Izmir via Paris turned into a disaster. With a 3-hour delay on the Newark to Paris leg, I landed in Paris around 2:00 PM to find my connecting flight to Izmir had already departed.
Unable to reach anyone from United in the transit area, I had to leave the area, passing through French passport control. United counters were closed, and no assistance was available. Stranded at the airport, the airport staff informed me that the United counters might open 2-3 hours before the next morning's flights, but there was no information from United about the connecting flight.
No hotel accommodation was provided despite multiple requests. Desperate, I waited for the United counters to open the next morning. Using the United app and translation tools, I managed to communicate with the Help Center, securing a seat on the earliest flight to Istanbul. However, they offered no assistance with accommodation, leaving me to spend a night in the cold airport without the means to buy food.
The night was planless, sleepless, and freezing. The following morning, still exhausted, I finally reached Istanbul and, after another delay, arrived in Izmir 23 hours later. Despite showing my receipt, my luggage didn't arrive for two more days, and when it did, I noticed it had been tampered with.
A week later, still recovering, I faced difficulties at work due to my delayed return. Having just recovered from tonsillitis, United Airlines left me stranded, hungry, and helpless during my connecting flights.
