On June 28, 2025, my spouse and I arrived at Antalya International Terminal to fly to Basel via SunExpress Airlines. We were each allowed 4 kg cabin baggage (8 kg total), and we had only one small wheeled cabin bag between us. The check-in agent placed a cabin tag on our bag and handed us our boarding passes without any issue or warning about the bag’s size or wheels.
We waited at Gate 203, and as boarding began, we were suddenly pulled aside in front of everyone. A male SunExpress staff member (whose name, if I recall correctly, was H.) told us that we could not bring our bag on board because it was wheeled and we had economy tickets. He said we would have to pay ₺80 or we wouldn’t be allowed to board.
What shocked us most was that the bag was never weighed or measured. This staff member had a handheld scale but did not use it. Instead, he stood at the gate corner like a trap, selectively picking people out. When we asked why the check-in agent had not warned us if the bag was a problem, we were met with hostility. H. got extremely aggressive, shouting that he would call the police and that we wouldn’t be allowed on the flight. He spoke so closely that we were literally spit on during the argument, humiliated in front of other passengers.
To avoid missing our flight, we had to throw our bag away and stuff our clothes into plastic bags. Another woman in line was subjected to the same treatment and was forced to pay ₺80 because her suitcase had souvenirs and couldn’t be discarded.
This was clearly a deliberate and abusive practice, targeting passengers just before boarding to pressure them into paying extra. I find it completely unethical and unacceptable. From now on, I will avoid flying with SunExpress at all costs, and I urge others to be cautious. I expect an apology and a full refund of the unjust ₺80 demand, along with a review of this exploitative gate behavior.
