No online facility was provided to select the excess baggage option for our journey from HYD to ARN. We were charged an extremely high amount for our excess baggage, around 19 kg. The itinerary was purchased directly from the Qatar Airways website at the time of booking. Our journey included a connecting flight (Indigo as a partner airline) from HYD to DOH.
We faced two major issues after booking:
Rescheduled Flight: Our flight from HYD to DOH was rescheduled and preponed from 9 PM to 4 PM, increasing the layover at Doha from 2-3 hours (as per the original booking) to 13 hours. This caused significant inconvenience.
No Option to Pre-Purchase Excess Baggage Online: There was no facility to pre-book excess baggage online. After multiple calls to both Qatar Airways and Indigo, we were told bluntly that excess baggage could only be paid for at the airport due to the involvement of partner airlines.
As a result, we were forced to pay a staggering 63,115 INR (around 8,300 SEK) at the airport for 19 kg of excess baggage (receipt attached). In contrast, on our journey from ARN to CCU under the same PNR (where both flights were Qatar Airways-operated), we were charged 2,940 SEK for over 10 kg of excess baggage, which we could pay for online.
If airlines choose to disable the option of pre-purchasing baggage online, the expectation is that passengers won’t be penalized with exorbitant charges at the airport. Since the ticket was purchased directly through Qatar Airways, it’s incredibly disappointing to see such poor coordination with partner airlines.
This isn’t my first time flying with Qatar Airways, and I’ve never faced such issues before. However, after this experience, I don’t think I will choose to fly with them again.
