This weekend, our impromptu getaway to Bozcaada turned into an Airbnb disaster. As a long-time Airbnb customer, the newly introduced identity verification process turned into a 15-minute ordeal just to upload my ID. The app was frustratingly slow.
After finding the Vita Longa Bozcaada hotel, I entered my credit card details and proceeded with the booking. Despite investing 10 minutes and paying extra for what seemed like an available room, the booking got stuck in limbo. About 30 minutes to 1 hour later, the hotel owner called, revealing that another person had made a reservation by phone. We waited 15 minutes for this person.
Then, he called to cancel our booking because he had finally reached the other person, who confirmed their arrival. After an hour and a half of effort and waiting, around 8 PM, we were left without accommodation because Airbnb shamelessly charged my credit card without confirming room availability...
Additionally, the other customer contacted the hotel directly, receiving preferential treatment from the owner without Airbnb's involvement. The hotel owner's behavior was ruthless and disrespectful, but the real issue lies in Airbnb failing to protect its customers...
Had I called the hotel directly, I wouldn't have dealt with the absurd identity check, not needed to assume I'd entered my credit card details to book, and probably wouldn't have faced a booking cancellation. Why should I ever use Airbnb again!
