USPS Returned My Package Without Attempting Delivery

My package arrived from the United States and shows as having reached my area, but it has still not been delivered to me. Even though I have been at home every day, the tracking now shows that the package is in the USPS return process.

How can a package be returned without any delivery attempt to my address? I paid $70 in shipping, yet the package was sent back without ever reaching my home.

It is extremely disappointing to receive such poor service for such an expensive shipment. I expect a clear explanation as to why my package was returned without any delivery attempt.
