TP-Link Tapo P110 Spontaneous Power Cut Destroys Refrigerator and Stored Food
On July 15, 2025, I purchased two Tapo P110 smart plugs manufactured by TP-Link. While one unit connected to a dishwasher has operated without issue, the second unit connected to my main refrigerator has suffered catastrophic failures, causing severe financial loss and property damage.
The product defects manifested in two distinct incidents:
Electronic Damage: During initial use, the smart plug caused an electrical surge that destroyed the electronic control board of the refrigerator, resulting in a 5,000 TRY repair cost.
Spontaneous Power Cut: On August 23, 2026, upon returning home, I discovered that the Tapo P110 smart plug had spontaneously powered off without any manual intervention, active timers, or scheduled shutoffs configured in the application. Because internet access was down, no remote notifications were logged.
This spontaneous power disconnection cut electricity to the appliance for weeks. Consequently, all stored meat, dairy, and frozen food spoiled completely, causing an immediate loss of approximately 20,000 TRY and leaving a severe, lingering biohazard odor in my home. Due to health and safety risks, the contaminated refrigerator could no longer be used and was discarded, requiring an out-of-pocket replacement purchase of 40,000 TRY.
A smart plug that damages appliance electronics and cuts power unpredictably constitutes a severe safety risk and a defective product. Furthermore, the Tapo application lacks adequate logging or critical alert mechanisms to diagnose sudden power disruptions.
I demand that TP-Link conduct a comprehensive technical investigation of this defective unit, provide a formal written explanation for the spontaneous shutdown, issue a full refund for the Tapo P110 plug, and compensate my total direct financial damages of 65,000 TRY (5,000 TRY board repair + 20,000 TRY lost food + 40,000 TRY replacement appliance).
