On August 20, 2023, at 11:30, my spouse (a Romanian citizen) and I purchased round-trip tickets (FR1181) from Bucharest to Venice with Ryanair, departing on 20.08 and returning on 24.08. This morning, when we approached the counter (No. 95) at the airport, we were directed to their supervisor. She bluntly stated that only citizens of the European Schengen region are allowed to pass, disregarding my residence permit and marriage documents, prioritizing the company's rules over the Romanian government-issued residence permit. Despite being married, they treated us differently, resulting in the cancellation of our tickets.
When booking online and making the payment, there was no pop-up or warning on the company's website, even though we entered my passport number and nationality as Turkish (T.C.). Furthermore, despite having our email registered, we received no warning email. To prevent our reservation from being canceled, we had to shell out 600 euros for a last-minute ticket (W4 3161) with Wizz Air.
While both the Romanian and Italian governments had no issues, Ryanair's self-proclaimed status as a rule-setter, creating a position above national laws, is shameful. By enforcing rules and causing last-minute distress, they are pocketing money from passengers they refuse to fly, resulting in numerous grievances.
