On February 25th, I purchased two round-trip tickets to New York with FlixBus for a total of $349.96 CAD. To reduce the price, I researched departures from different cities and ultimately decided to leave from Montreal. However, when I booked the tickets from Montreal to New York and clicked submit, the page refreshed and required me to re-enter the information. On my second submission at 15:43, I noticed that the departure city had changed to Plattsburgh. I canceled the purchase at 15:44, just one minute later, and at 15:47 I repurchased the correct tickets departing from Montreal. When I checked my email for confirmation, I discovered that the canceled ticket had been refunded only as a voucher equal to the purchase amount. I contacted FlixBus through their website, as they do not provide a contact number, to request a refund, but they stated that their terms and conditions (TOC) do not allow cash refunds and that all refunds are issued as vouchers. Despite explaining that I canceled immediately after realizing the mistake, they simply repeated their policy. I believe this constitutes a deceptive practice, as the TOC is provided only as a link before purchase and does not clearly outline the conditions for cash refunds. Instead, it obscures important details through multiple linked pages. It also fails to explain what happens to unused voucher balances, or what would occur if the company were acquired or declared bankruptcy. Additionally, the voucher’s value cannot be guaranteed to cover the same travel distance in the future. I am not alone in this experience, as there are numerous complaints online regarding their return policy. I strongly suggest submitting an official complaint to your consumer protection agency or the FTC if you are in the United States.
