IKEA Writing Board Broke During Assembly but They Blamed Me

I bought a writing board from IKEA for my child and started assembling it exactly according to the manual. I followed every step and installed all the parts properly—around 15 screws in total—without any issues. When I got to the part where the paper roll is mounted on the front, I screwed in the right side with no problem. But when I moved to the left side, the screw only went in halfway before it started spinning freely without tightening. It didn’t hold and came out along with the chipboard. Clearly, the chipboard in that spot is defective and not sturdy. If I managed to drive in 15 screws without any issue, why would this one fail? Still, the “knowledgeable” IKEA staff quickly assumed I had overtightened the screw or used a power tool, rather than considering that their product might be faulty. Apparently, I applied force on only one screw—very logical. I expected a reputable company like IKEA to prioritize customer satisfaction, but I see now that I was mistaken. The least they could have done was take the product back and inspect it, even as a formality. Maybe we were partly at fault, but according to them, all the blame is ours and perfection belongs only to IKEA.
