Enterprise/Alamo Charged €1,172 for Rim Scratches After Car Rental Return

I rented a car from Enterprise/Alamo while traveling abroad, and after returning it, I was billed €1,172 for rim scratches. I was never informed to check the rims upon pickup, and now I am being held responsible for damage I may not have caused.
Shouldn’t this type of damage be covered by insurance? This feels like an unfair charge, and I am being forced to pay for something that wasn’t properly documented at the start.
I expect Enterprise/Alamo to provide a clear explanation and review this charge. If you're renting a car internationally, be extremely careful and document every detail! Has anyone else experienced this issue?
