I arrived at my Airbnb in Belgrade at 10 PM to check in—only to find that someone else was already inside the apartment. I immediately tried to contact the host by phone and message, but got no response. So I called Airbnb support, who told me not to worry and to go wait at a nearby restaurant or café. They said they’d give the host one hour to respond and even offered $50 as compensation. I agreed and waited at a café in the cold, hoping for an update.
The host finally messaged me at midnight—two hours later—saying he had fallen asleep and accidentally gave the wrong apartment because he manages three properties in the same building. So if he hadn’t woken up, I would’ve been left completely stranded outside for the night. Even worse, Airbnb never called back to check in or offer support.
The next day, after we had already spent the night in a different unit, Airbnb finally called around 3 PM asking what had happened—way too late. Their support was useless when it actually mattered.
Airbnb claims to offer safe and reliable stays, but in reality, you’re entirely at the mercy of the host. If something goes wrong, don't expect Airbnb to step in and help in real time. I no longer trust this platform and won’t be using it again unless they take serious action to protect guests.
