Turkish Airlines clearly does not know how to handle pet transportation! Despite their social media campaigns, the reality is far from what they promote. While flying my dog from Dubai to Istanbul:
They canceled my dog’s reservation even after confirming and charging for it.
No notification was provided about the cancellation.
On the day of the flight, when I called the call center for confirmation, they gave incorrect information and directed us to the airport.
As a result, we were left with a canceled reservation, hours of stress and arguments, and only managed to board thanks to the sympathy of a THY airport staff member who allowed my dog on the plane.
I filed a complaint (Complaint No: S1-34796574), and the response was: "Yes, we made a mistake; it won’t happen again." But it did happen again:
I completed and submitted all the required documents for my dog.
The flight was on Monday, and THY requires a health certificate 48 hours in advance, without which they won't even make a reservation. With government offices closed on Saturday and the August 30 holiday, I ended up paying for the health certificate twice.
We received flight approval and paid over 22,000.
We checked in at business class four hours before the flight, thinking everything was finally in order.
However, a person claiming to be a manager said we couldn't board because they had accepted too many dogs on the flight. He insisted that the mistake was ours to bear and that my dog had to be placed in cargo, despite me explaining that my dog has separation anxiety and could die in cargo.
My 80-year-old father, who has a heart condition, started feeling unwell from the stress. After arguing, I was finally allowed to board with my dog, but they tried to downgrade me from business class to economy, which I refused. A small dog was forcibly put into cargo, and another dog that couldn’t fly for the same reason had to return the next day. Throughout the flight, the cabin crew continuously harassed me about my dog.
Don't be fooled by the smiling pets seated in business class in the ads; this was the worst experience of my life, and I was left in tears. Turkish Airlines should stop offering pet travel services altogether.
