Unfair Currency Conversion by Western Union Istanbul Office — Missing Money Complaint
On October 4, 2025, I sent €310 from Montenegro to the Ateş Turizm (Western Union) office located in Yakuplu Hürriyet Neighborhood, Istanbul. However, the recipient was told, “We don’t have euros, we can only pay in TL,” and was instead given ₺14,880. Based on the exchange rate on the day of the transaction, the amount should have been around ₺15,150. Additionally, I paid a €37 transfer fee when sending the money from Montenegro.
I am aware that this Western Union office is not a currency exchange bureau and is required to pay the recipient in the same currency that was sent. However, this office converted the euros into Turkish lira at an unfairly low exchange rate, which is both improper and illegal, and it caused financial loss to the customer. I have never experienced such a situation with any other Western Union office before.
I request that the missing amount be refunded to me and that Western Union ensures all future payments are delivered in the same currency sent by the sender. I also ask that this incident be investigated thoroughly to prevent others from being similarly mistreated. My transaction number is 3000499722.
