Clinique says “allergy tested, fragrance free” but I still got redness — how could Clinique fail here?

When Clinique says that a product has been "allergy tested," they mean that it has been tried on hundreds of people under controlled conditions and with a small group of allergens.

There is no promise of no reaction because everyone is sensitive in their own way, and ingredients like denatured alcohol, lanolin derivatives, or some preservatives can still irritate or redden the skin even if they aren't normally allergens.

Clinique says that "fragrance free" doesn't include added perfumes, but it does include plant extracts or masking agents that have their own smell.

For people with sensitive skin, even these can make their skin red, so the brand's claims that the products are safe don't mean that they won't irritate anyone.
