Turkish Airlines' Refusal Of A Ticket Change In A Medical Situation

January 8 12:19 PM137

I purchased a non-refundable round-trip ticket from Turkish Airlines for the Amsterdam–Istanbul route. Due to an urgent family medical situation, I needed to change my ticket dates to 14.01.2026–19.01.2026 on the same route. My booking reference (PNR) is TI26VW. My mother suffered a hip fracture and subsequently underwent hip surgery on 06.01.2026. Because of this serious health situation, I urgently needed to travel earlier than my original flight dates. I contacted Turkish Airlines customer service and was informed that my ticket was non-refundable and that I had to submit a request through the Turkish Airlines website. On 05.01.2026, I submitted my request via the website by uploading a doctor’s note from the hospital regarding my mother’s hip fracture and surgery, as well as identity documents obtained from e-Devlet to prove our family relationship. Despite clearly documenting this urgent medical and family situation, my request was immediately rejected, with the only explanation being that my ticket was non-refundable. There was no flexibility, no alternative offered, and no indication that my circumstances had been taken into account. I am aware that airlines can exceptionally allow ticket changes for compassionate reasons in urgent medical and family situations. Additionally, the date change I requested was on the same route and, at the time of my request, there was no price difference between my existing ticket and the alternative flights on the dates I needed. In spite of this, Turkish Airlines, as a large and well-established company, did not present any alternative solution, did not make even a minimal effort to assist, and rejected my request in an entirely rigid and uncompromising manner. This approach has been extremely disappointing and has significantly damaged my trust in the company. I purchased my ticket by fully paying the fare, and I now request that a reasonable solution be implemented. Primarily, I request that the dates on my current Amsterdam–Istanbul round-trip ticket be changed to earlier dates that are suitable for my mother’s health condition If this is not possible, I request that my ticket be placed on hold or converted into an open ticket for use at a later date. If that is also not possible, I request a refund of the amount I paid. I expect the inconvenience I have experienced to be resolved with a fair, reasonable, and humane approach in line with the seriousness of this medical situation.
