I purchased an Opel Astra L in December 2022, and recently noticed paint peeling on the metallic gray section of the steering wheel. I reported this to the service center, but was informed that Opel headquarters denied my warranty claim. I then contacted Opel's complaint line directly and sent them photos as requested. Opel's explanation was that the damage was due to 'external factors' and not covered by warranty.
The only 'external factor' I can think of is my hand, specifically my thumb, as it's the only thing that touches the steering wheel. Should I keep the steering wheel at room temperature and wear cotton gloves to prevent 'external factors' from immediately stripping the paint? It's absurd that paint is peeling on a 1.5-year-old car's interior, yet I'm being blamed for it.
If Opel can't handle this properly, they shouldn't be in business. They seem to make decisions based solely on photos without proper investigation, denying warranty coverage while happily charging a fortune for extended warranties.
I've been a loyal Opel customer, having owned Astra J, Astra K, and now Astra L models. I've had issues before, but Opel or GM were good at resolving them. Since Stellantis took over, their problem-solving approach has disappeared. They just blame everything on 'external factors' or the user, pushing every defect or malfunction onto the customer.
Stellantis needs to update their approach, or their car sales will plummet. I've attached photos of the steering wheel for reference - it's worth paying attention to this issue.
