On August 30, 2025, I rented a car from the Hertz (Thrifty) office in Mytilene city center with reservation number 623168999. At the time of pickup, I was offered insurance options, but I declined and chose to pay a deposit instead. The staff never mentioned that the vehicle was “brand new” — in fact, the car already had over 3,000 km on it.
During the rental, a very small mark appeared on the rear left bumper. I showed this damage to the staff at drop-off and asked for the cost to be deducted from my deposit. Instead, the Hertz employee claimed the vehicle was “brand new” and said the cost would not be deducted from the deposit. They demanded €1,029.60 in total (the €850 deposit plus additional taxes and accident fees) and charged this full amount to my credit card.
When I asked to escalate the issue to a higher authority, I was refused. I was even told that if I did not pay, the police would be called and I could be prevented from leaving the country. Despite repeatedly pointing out that the fee was excessive for such a minimal scratch, none of my objections were considered. I also requested an official repair invoice, but was told it would not be provided.
I have already sent an email to Hertz Greece customer relations, but after a week, I still have not received any response.
I find it unacceptable to be charged more than my deposit amount for a tiny scratch, especially without being provided with a repair invoice. I request that all charges beyond the €850 deposit plus applicable tax be refunded immediately.
