Etihad Airways Charged ₺5,000 Unfair Cabin Baggage Fee on Flight EY801
On August 16, 2025, my family and I traveled with Etihad Airways on flight EY801 from Tokyo Narita to Abu Dhabi. We were three passengers carrying standard cabin baggage and my spouse’s personal backpack. At the check-in counter in Tokyo Narita Airport, the staff demanded an additional ₺5,000 fee for one of our cabin bags, which we were forced to pay by card.
What made the situation even more frustrating was that on the same flight, we saw many other passengers boarding with both cabin baggage and backpacks without any issue or extra charge. I explained to the staff that my spouse’s item was a personal backpack and mine was simply a handbag, but the explanation was ignored, and they insisted on the fee.
As a family traveling with a child, this policy was applied in an unfair and inconsistent manner, causing unnecessary stress and inconvenience during what was already a long, connecting flight. This experience was extremely disappointing and not what I would expect from an airline like Etihad.
I am requesting a refund of the ₺5,000 unfair baggage charge and for Etihad Airways to review how its ground staff apply baggage rules, so other passengers are not subjected to the same treatment.
