Western Union Paid My Money to the Wrong Person Instead of Recipient
I sent money from Turkey to my aunt who lives in the United States via Western Union. When my aunt went to the specified branch to receive the money, she presented her ID and all requested information completely and correctly to the staff. Despite this, she was told that she could not receive the money sent from Turkey and no payment was made to her. What makes the situation even more alarming is that on the same day, approximately 15 minutes before the branch closed, the recipient information of the money we sent from Turkey was changed and the full amount was paid to a completely different male person. While the real recipient could not receive any payment, it must be clearly explained how and with which verification steps this money was paid to another person. This incident shows that there is a very serious vulnerability in Western Union’s security and verification system. It also raises serious questions as to whether the staff at the branch where the transaction took place carried out the necessary checks properly. This situation must be investigated in detail by Western Union and all responsible persons and processes must be examined. For about a month we have been constantly stalled by Western Union. No concrete step has been taken to resolve the issue and our grievance has still not been remedied. My request is very clear: the money I sent from Turkey must either be fully refunded to me or paid to the real recipient, my aunt in the United States. As a company that has caused damage to its customer due to deficiencies in its own security and verification system, Western Union must compensate this loss. Otherwise, I state that I will use all my legal rights and will take the matter to the relevant consumer authorities and competent institutions and follow it to the end.
