Volkswagen Pressured Me to Buy Insurance for My New Car
After purchasing a brand-new Volkswagen and receiving the invoice, I went to the dealership to sign the vehicle request form. They offered to arrange insurance and comprehensive coverage for me. I told them that my father had his own insurance agent, that I would compare prices, and then decide. I also asked whether these services were mandatory. The dealership representative said that comprehensive coverage was not mandatory but traffic insurance was. I then asked if it was mandatory to get the traffic insurance specifically from their dealership, as I wanted to do a price check. The representative told me, “Yes, you have to; otherwise, why would we give you a discount?” and added, “We would sell you the car at the list price.” The insurance representative, who was present and overheard the conversation, did not intervene. Feeling pressured and trusting them as a corporate entity, and without the chance to research, I agreed to the insurance. Since I trusted them, I also decided to take the comprehensive coverage. Later at home, when discussing this with my father, we called our trusted insurance agent for details and pricing. They quoted a few thousand liras less and said, “Since you purchased the car outright, as far as I know, you can have the insurance done anywhere you like.” We did not pursue the matter further at the time. However, after facing issues during the vehicle delivery and encountering unfair commercial practices later, I began to investigate the process I had gone through. I eventually canceled both the insurance and comprehensive coverage contracts. I learned that, although my contract contained no clause making insurance mandatory, I was verbally pressured into purchasing it, which is not a lawful practice. I later discovered that the insurance company was VDF Insurance, owned by Volkswagen and Doğuş Automotive, and I became concerned whether this was a standard practice. I will be filing a complaint with the relevant authorities. After purchasing a brand-new car, insurance and comprehensive coverage cannot be made mandatory, and I am bringing this to public attention.
