Remitly & Banks Decline Liability After Major Exchange Loss
On November 10, 2025, at 03:02 AM, we transferred 6,000 USD from the Remitly account registered under my brother’s name in the United States to my Turkish Lira account at Yapı Kredi Bank, Istanbul Esenler Branch (IBAN last four digits: 3714). However, during the transaction, we mistakenly entered my Yapı Kredi TL IBAN instead of my İş Bank USD IBAN. Despite this incorrect IBAN entry, the Remitly mobile app did not give any warning and processed the transfer. Later, I saw that only 6,000 TL was deposited into my account, even though 6,000 USD had been sent. Based on the current exchange rate, the difference amounts to approximately 245,000 TL — meaning a 42-fold loss.
The transaction reference code is: R16739137937. As soon as I noticed the issue, I contacted both Remitly and Moka United on November 10. Remitly stated that only the transaction fee (61.99 USD) could be refunded and that they would not accept any responsibility for the currency loss. Moka United said the issue was related to Remitly and did not assist either. In addition, there was absolutely no warning, notification, or guideline during the transaction about mismatched IBAN type or currency.
I also contacted Yapı Kredi Bank and İş Bank, but they likewise accepted no responsibility and could not provide any help.
I believe this incident occurred due to system deficiencies. Because only 6,000 TL was received instead of 6,000 USD, I suffered a significant financial loss of approximately 245,000 TL. I request that my loss be compensated and that my grievance be resolved. I have all related receipts and transaction documents.
