Netflix Ditching H.264 for H.265 & AV1 - Older TVs Lose Support

May 5, 2024 4:33 PM50

I found out from talking to a Netflix customer service representative in the United States that Netflix is slowly getting rid of content that uses outdated technology from their platform. Lately, due to the removal of H.264 content, support for older TVs has been discontinued as they are unable to play videos encoded with newer formats like H.265 or AV1. Right now, you can only access the platform on devices that support newer encoding technologies such as H.265 and AV1. The customer service agent explained that this adjustment was done to maximize savings on CDN expenses. In addition, they mentioned that H.265 and AV1 content require only half the storage space compared to older H.264 videos, which supports Netflix's efforts to minimize electricity and water usage. So, that's the deal; hence, it seems unlikely for Netflix to work on older TVs.
