I Got Charged by Expedia for a Car Rental I Couldn’t Use Due to Driver Name Error

My spouse used their Expedia account to book a rental car on my behalf, but the system automatically assigned their name as the driver instead of mine. We noticed the issue right after the booking and immediately emailed Expedia to request a correction to the driver’s name. Unfortunately, we received no response for nearly 7 hours.

When we arrived at the Sixt rental office, I was told they couldn’t release the car to me because I wasn’t listed as the driver — despite being the one who was supposed to drive. The Sixt staff were kind enough to directly contact Expedia and confirmed in writing that the entire rental should be refunded with no cancellation fee. I have that written proof.

Still, Expedia stayed silent for three days. Every message we sent was met with automated replies telling us to “wait 72 business hours.” Meanwhile, I was stranded in the U.S. with a small child and had to pay high taxi fares to get around. The vacation turned into an absolute nightmare.

Despite never using the rental and Sixt’s clear refund authorization, Expedia initially refused a refund. Only after multiple follow-up emails and providing proof did they issue a partial refund — unfairly deducting fees. I wasted my money, time, and energy — and Expedia did nothing to correct their own system's failure.

Let this be a warning: if you book a prepaid car rental through Expedia, avoid it unless you have free cancellation and pay-at-pickup options. Otherwise, even a small technical mistake can ruin your plans, and Expedia will not help you. I demand a full refund for the unused service and accountability for this mess.
