FIFA World Cup Referee
I am submitting this complaint regarding the referee of the Colombia vs Congo match in the World Cup played on June 24. In my view this referee’s performance, and in particular the handling of added time, was unacceptable and far below the standard required for a World Cup tournament. The key incident occurred in the 96th minute. The referee blew the final whistle exactly at the end of the 6 minutes of added time, even though there had been clear time-wasting and interruptions during those added minutes that were not compensated. At the moment the whistle was blown, Congo was actively attacking and in a promising situation, yet the referee ended the game without allowing for the lost time to be properly added. This rigid and context-blind application of timekeeping directly affected the flow and potential outcome of the match and gives the impression of poor game management and a lack of understanding of the spirit of added time. I consider this to be the behavior of a lousy referee who should not have been appointed to a World Cup match in the first place. I request an official review of this referee’s performance in this match, with a transparent evaluation of the decisions related to added time and match control. Based on this review, I expect that this referee will not be assigned to further matches after the group stage, as I do not believe their level is appropriate for this competition.
