The Nintendo Switch is equipped with a cooling system with a fan, but during long play sessions in demanding games (Zelda, Pokémon, Mario Odyssey) or in hot conditions, the console can heat up significantly.
If the temperature goes beyond safe levels, the device automatically shuts down to protect itself.
Main causes of overheating:
Cooling system clogged with dust
Using the dock without proper ventilation
Damaged or worn-out fan
Extended operation under heavy load
What you can do:
Ensure ventilation — don’t place the dock flush against a wall, leave room for airflow.
Clean the cooling system — with compressed air or at a service center (especially if the fan is noisy).
Use a cooling stand or fan for the dock.
Monitor room temperature — avoid using the console in direct sunlight.
If overheating happens even in light games, this may indicate a faulty fan or thermal paste, in which case a service check is needed.
