On February 14, my spouse and I visited the Enza Home store located in Istanbul Gaziosmanpaşa, under the Avrupa TEM-2 Residences, to look at sofas. We spent hours speaking with the sales representative about the model we liked—discussing color options, which module would best fit our living room, and possible adjustments.

The sales representative checked the price of the module we wanted on the computer and then told us, “With the discount, we can bring it down to around 72,000 TL (approximately $2,333 USD), I’ll make it 70,000 TL (about $2,267 USD) for you.” We discussed it between ourselves, noting that although we had liked another sofa at a different store for 50,000 TL (about $1,667 USD), this one was more comfortable, so it might make sense to stretch our budget. We agreed that this was the maximum we could afford.

At that point, we decided to purchase the sofa with a wooden coffee table included and asked the representative whether adding it would change the price. He checked on the computer and said, “It does affect the price, but I’ll still help you at the same 70,000 TL (about $2,267 USD).” I even used an app to visualize how the sofa would look in my living room, and throughout the process we repeatedly confirmed with the representative that the final price would be 70,000 TL. We reached a clear agreement on that amount.

When we finally sat down at the desk to complete the transaction, my spouse handed over the credit card. We once again confirmed that the final price was 70,000 TL and adjusted our card limit accordingly. After the POS machine returned a “declined” message, we were confused because we had set the exact limit of 70,000 TL. Following that, the representative suddenly stated that he was attempting to charge 90,000 TL (approximately $3,000 USD).

Up until that moment, the figure of 90,000 TL had never once been mentioned. We only learned about it after the card was declined. It appeared that, had our credit limit allowed it, they would have charged that higher amount without our knowledge. When we insisted that we had been told 70,000 TL, they denied ever saying that. Since the quoted price had changed, we refused to proceed.

As we were about to leave, they said there must have been a misunderstanding and offered, as a so-called exception, to make it 80,000 TL (about $2,667 USD). However, this was still significantly higher than the originally agreed 70,000 TL and felt dismissive and unprofessional. Because the price had already exceeded our budget and an attempt had been made to process a higher charge without our knowledge, we declined the offer and left the store.
