CarGurus helped me purchase a car, but the overall process failed. The salesman completely misrepresented the car; what was shown did not match what I really got. Right away I complained, and the dealer promised to take care of it; naturally, nothing occurred. To make matters worse, I cannot handle it right away as I was traveling the day the automobile came. The lending company provides the sole bit of protection; it only lasts if you are still paying. Early payment of mine meant that I had no backup should things go south. Really, I would not advise using CarGurus. Many times, the listings are overpriced, and it seems as though no actual mechanism exists to handle dealers who mislead consumers.
