On Upwork, fake jobs are posted to make you buy proposals — how can you spot and avoid them?

If fake job posts appear on Upwork designed to make you spend Connects (paid proposals), the best approach is to learn how to identify them before applying and report them to protect your account.

Here’s a helpful guide:

• Check the client’s profile: Verify if their payment method is Payment verified, and look at their country and hiring history. If they have no reviews, no prior payments, or no completed contracts, be cautious.

• Be skeptical of unrealistic budgets: If the job promises unusually high pay for simple tasks or lacks clear technical details, it may be a scam or an automated posting.

• Avoid off-platform communication: If the listing asks you to contact them on WhatsApp, Telegram, or by external email before being hired, report it immediately using the Flag as inappropriate option on the job post.

• Check the client’s activity: Fake listings are often newly created, with no active interviews or invitations. Review the client’s activity section on the job page to confirm their credibility.

If you’ve already lost money or Connects due to fake job posts, file your complaint on Xolvie to document the situation and receive guidance on how to recover your resources and secure your account.
