To get correct shade matching, MAC pro artists use a mix of tools they find in-store, online, and professional methods.
MAC's Foundation Shade Finder is an important internal tool because it helps you find your undertone (for example, W, NW, N, NC, or C) and depth (using a numbering system), so you can match your skin tone to your undertone before you choose a finish or formula.
On MAC's "Shade Matcher" platforms, they also use virtual try-on technology that lets customers see shades through a live camera in neutral lighting. This helps cut down on mismatches caused by lighting or device screens.
Professionals usually test shades on the jawline (not the wrist), watch how they change over 10 to 15 minutes, compare them in natural light if possible, and ask the customer what other types of shades they wear to cross-reference.
