FedEx Charged Me for Recipients’ Customs Duties
Customs duties that should have been paid by the recipients of the products I shipped internationally were charged to me through FedEx and Air Express. I was told that because the recipients had not paid the customs duties, the entire amount would be charged back to me, and I was pressured with threats of legal action. I have never encountered a system this unreasonable in my life.
Air Express issued an invoice for $67 dated July 31, 2026, and another invoice for $355 dated August 26, 2026, and I was ultimately required to pay a total of $371. Although it is generally understood in international shipping that customs duties are the responsibility of the recipient, charging these costs back to me without my approval or clear prior disclosure is highly problematic from both a business and ethical standpoint.
I was not informed about this practice when I shipped the products, and I proceeded with the shipments on the understanding that the recipients would be responsible for the customs duties. Being pressured into making these payments later through threats of legal action has caused me both financial and personal distress.
I request that FedEx and Air Express investigate their responsibilities in this process and provide a written and detailed explanation of the contract terms and conditions under which these customs duties were charged back to the sender. I also request a refund of the amount I paid. If necessary, I am prepared to have my call records and correspondence reviewed, and I expect this matter to be resolved promptly.
