Duolingo Story Includes LGBT Content — Not Appropriate for Kids
My family and I have been using Duolingo’s free version for about three months, mainly to help my child practice English. However, I recently came across a story in Unit 1, Section 6, that made me extremely uncomfortable.
In this story, a character named A* takes a taxi to the airport and tells the driver that they are going on a honeymoon. The driver assumes A***’s spouse is a man, but it turns out that A***’s spouse is a woman named L*. The story ends with the two characters saying “I love you” to each other.
I find it inappropriate for an educational app used by children as young as 10 years old to include LGBT-themed content like this. For that reason, I’ve decided that my child will no longer use the app. I’m requesting that Duolingo ensure all lessons and stories are suitable for children, that LGBT content be removed, and that parents be informed about such material in advance.
