Between September 12–19, 2025, our two families planned a vacation in Kyrenia, Cyprus, and booked accommodation through Airbnb from a host under the username “perlastays.” When we arrived, the host welcomed us warmly and sincerely. During our stay, we had no major complaints — though I should note that on the last night, a storm in the area caused loud wave and wind noises due to poor insulation, which made it difficult to sleep.

The real issue began after the vacation. On October 2, 2025, at 7:44 p.m., the host sent us a message claiming that we had cracked a kitchen wall tile and demanding ₺45,000 (approx. £805) in compensation. However, we had checked out on September 19, 2025 — 13 days before this accusation was made. The alleged damage did not exist when we left the property. Despite the claim that we caused it, such an accusation requires clear proof.

After returning to work on October 3, I consulted with at least 10 tile companies and ceramic experts, all of whom agreed on one thing: this kind of damage cannot be caused by users. Hairline cracks can occur during tile production, and if the sublayer was not properly filled or there was pressure imbalance during installation, the tile may crack over time. The photos clearly show no impact marks or signs of user damage.

It seems that Ms. D****, the host, is looking for a scapegoat to cover the cost of replacing her kitchen tiles. Ironically, just before our departure, she asked us to leave a positive review, only to turn around days later with insults, false accusations, and an unreasonable claim. We handed over the property in perfect condition, and the fact that she made such a claim nearly two weeks later is completely unreasonable.

We have since obtained an expert report signed by three architects and one civil engineer, confirming that the damage did not result from user error. This entire experience serves as an important warning for Airbnb travelers:
No matter how positive the reviews are, do not rely solely on them. Some reviews can be written under pressure or persuasion. Always request a written and signed handover document when checking out. And be aware — when the tourist season ends and the renovation season begins, some hosts may try to make guests pay for their own maintenance costs.
