Hilton Amsterdam Staff Member Targets Guest with Racist Remark During Checkout
I stayed for two nights at the Hilton hotel in Amsterdam from August 8 to August 10. During check-in, I was asked to pay a €50 deposit, which was charged to my credit card with the promise that it would be refunded upon checkout. When checking out, I asked again to confirm if the deposit would be refunded, mentioning that if it were not, it would cause complications for me once I returned home.
At that moment, a front desk employee named N*** made a deeply offensive and racist remark, explicitly saying, "Don't worry, this isn't Turkey." This comment deeply hurt both me and my family, making us feel excluded and degraded. Despite this, no hotel authority felt the need to apologize to us.
I spoke with the hotel management following the incident, but the situation was brushed off with claims that the employee never said such a thing. Dismissing this blatant racism and attempting to sweep it under the rug completely contradicts the corporate integrity I expected from a global brand like Hilton.
Therefore, I demand that a thorough investigation be conducted regarding the employee involved, that the incident be reviewed using hotel records, and that Hilton management issue a formal, written apology to me. I am filing this complaint not only on my own behalf, but also for other guests who might be subjected to similar discriminatory remarks.
Progress
On August 8, while checking into the Hampton by Hilton Amsterdam Centre East, I had a very disturbing dialogue with a red‑haired, glasses‑wearing employee at the reception whom I believe was named Natalia. During check‑in I was asked for a €50 deposit, and I said I could pay in cash. I was then told that the deposit must be paid by card. I asked what would happen if, after returning to my country, the refund was not made, and how I could know whether the refund would actually be issued.
In response, the reception staff said to me, “Don’t worry, this isn’t Turkey, we’re not Turkish, we will refund you.” This sentence carries a demeaning and racist implication about my country and identity, and I felt extremely hurt, devalued, and discriminated against. It is unacceptable for a hotel employee, especially a staff member at the front desk of an international chain, to use such a generalizing and contemptuous remark.
I also shared this negative experience with the hotel’s general manager, but the attitude I received was extremely rude and indifferent. Throughout my two‑night stay the weight of this incident never left me. Later I tried to share the situation in a review on Google, but I noticed that my reviews kept being deleted. This reinforced the feeling that the visibility of the discrimination I suffered was being deliberately suppressed.
My expectations from the Hampton by Hilton Amsterdam Centre East are that a proper investigation be carried out regarding the employee at the reception, that disciplinary measures be applied because of this racist and demeaning statement, and that the staff be seriously warned and trained to prevent such incidents from happening again. I also expect a clear and explicit apology from the brand for this hurtful experience.
