I would like to share the distress and concern I experienced due to a WhatsApp call from a country code that has no connection to me. Today at 2:21 PM, I received a video call on WhatsApp from a number with the +237 country code. After researching online, I learned that +237 belongs to Cameroon. I have no personal or business relationship with this country.
When I answered the call, I saw the image of a Black child, and the call ended immediately without any conversation. I then blocked the number right away and used the “block and report” option in the app. This incident has caused me serious concern about the security of my phone number and WhatsApp account.
I clearly state that I do not accept any responsibility in the event of my account details being compromised, my phone number being used without authorization, my private information, messages, or photos being accessed, or my identity being used to open companies, make purchases, or incur debts in my name. I believe that any responsibility arising from such security vulnerabilities or misuse lies with WhatsApp.
I request that a proper investigation be conducted, that stronger security measures be implemented to prevent calls from such foreign and suspicious numbers, and that user safety be treated as a priority.
