OkCupid Date Scam Led to $1,029 Restaurant Overcharge
On November 11, 2025, around 6:20 PM, I met someone in person whom I had connected with through the OkCupid app. We met at a venue in Mecidiyeköy, Şişli, Istanbul, next to Ziraat Bank, where the sign outside was barely visible. We ordered one portion of chicken skewers, one portion of lamb chops, two bottles of cocktail champagne, and two fruit plates. I expected the bill to be no more than $341, but instead I was presented with a total charge of $1,029. I was forced to pay by card and was only given a card receipt, with no official invoice or itemized bill. Due to the shock and pressure I experienced at the time, I was unable to object.
Out of frustration, I deleted the OkCupid app, which also erased my messages. As a result, I was unable to file a complaint or block the person through the app. This was the first time I have experienced something like this, and I suffered significant financial harm. I strongly suspect that the individual and the venue owner were acting together.
I request that OkCupid more strictly monitor its users, make identity verification mandatory, and ensure that members register with real and verified information. I urge the company to increase safety measures immediately so that others do not experience the same financial and emotional harm that I did.
