FedEx and Customs Charge Tax on a 34 USD Fishing Reel Without Notice
On October 12, 2024, my 34 USD fishing reel arrived at Istanbul Customs, but FedEx failed to notify me at any point. I discovered on my own that my item had been sent to storage. When I contacted FedEx, they directed me to Medtria Customs Brokerage, which then quoted a shocking total of approximately 15,000₺ in fees and charges for a product worth around 1,500₺. This includes a staggering 4,500₺ in customs tax — supposedly 60% — with numerous extra charges stacked on top.
I’ve requested a refund from Alibaba, but the entire process feels like a “win-win” scheme where the customer loses every time. I refuse to accept this unfair treatment and the absurd fees for a small purchase. The loss of my 62.41 USD investment and all the stress involved have left me deeply disappointed.
