Disrespectful Staff Member Attitude Problem
On 26 September 2026 at around 5:30 p.m., I had a very disappointing ordering experience at the Subway outlet in Balmoral Plaza, Singapore, despite being a very frequent customer who has visited this branch hundreds of times. When I started my order, I initially said “double ham – wait never mind, I’d like ham and cheese” because my budget was lower this week. The staff member began preparing the sandwich and at first there was no issue. However, when I briefly looked away, he grabbed more ham and started putting it on my sub, effectively making it double ham. I immediately told him “no, single ham, single ham.” He looked at me and laughed, which made me uncomfortable and unhappy, especially because I had just clearly changed my order to avoid the extra cost. Even if I cannot prove what he was thinking, it did not feel respectful, and I did not like that he changed my order while I was not looking. When it came to vegetables, I clearly said, as I always do at this branch, “tomato, corn, ketchup.” This has been my standard combination for a long time and I have never changed it. He put tomato and ketchup, then went to get pickles, which I had not asked for. At this point I was very confused and started to feel that he was deliberately not following my instructions. I firmly said “no” and repeated my order several times because, from my point of view, he was simply not focusing on what I was saying and was making the sandwich he wanted instead of what I ordered. At the end, I said “no cookie, no meal.” I could not hear exactly what he muttered, but it sounded like he said something under his breath. Thinking he might have misheard, I repeated myself, and then he again reacted with “huh.” By this third incident, after already having to correct my order multiple times, I was convinced that he had something against me or was at least not taking me seriously. I repeated “no cookie, no meal” in a firm voice, and he responded with “why are you repeating yourself, can’t you talk in a calm way?” After all his mistakes and my repeated corrections, this response made me feel like I was being made to look like the unreasonable one, when I was simply trying to get my order right. I understand and respect Singapore’s rules against abuse of workers and I also work in a job myself, so I know what it means to take a shift seriously and give your best. In this situation I was speaking in clear, native-level English, without stuttering or making my request hard to understand. I believe my frustration was justified because the same staff member repeatedly failed to follow very simple, standard instructions that I give on every visit. One mistake I can accept, but having to repeat myself around nine times over three separate parts of one simple order is not acceptable customer service. I am sharing this complaint because I expect better from a brand I have supported so many times. I would like Subway to look into the staff training and ensure that employees listen carefully, follow customer instructions accurately, and do not change orders while the customer is not looking or respond dismissively when the customer tries to correct mistakes. Customers are human beings, not robots; when our instructions are ignored repeatedly, it is natural to become firm and upset. I hope this incident will be taken seriously so that other regular customers do not have to go through the same experience at this outlet.
