If your flight has been canceled, you may be offered an alternative flight (new route or different date). In some cases, there is also the option of a full refund. However, neither alternative flights nor refunds can be offered in the case of cancellations due to a critical financial situation, such as insolvency or bankruptcy.
If your booking is affected by a delay, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline. This depends on the length of the delay and the distance between the departure point and destination and is governed by European Regulation EC 261/2004.
