On August 23, 2023, I purchased a Friheten corner sofa set from IKEA's Ümraniye store. Although the sofa has been used only occasionally in a guest room, it began to pill heavily in less than a year. I reported the issue to IKEA. The assigned staff member stated that such wear and tear is common with this product and that even the showroom items exhibit the same problem within a few months. I was informed that the fabric would be replaced and that I would be contacted later that day, but this commitment was not fulfilled. When I followed up myself, I was told that the issue was "normal" due to the fabric composition. However, I was not informed about this at the time of purchase. As a result, I submitted a complaint to the Consumer Arbitration Committee. My application, under the name of Emine Y*** O***, was reviewed and the following decision was issued: "According to the Consumer Protection Law No. 6502, if the repair of the product in question is not possible, the company is to take back the product and refund the amount of ₺14,499 to me. In the event that the decision is not implemented, it will be enforced under the provisions of the Enforcement and Bankruptcy Law." Despite this clear and binding ruling, no solution has yet been provided. As a consumer, I have suffered both financial loss and distress due to the prolongation of the process. It is deeply disappointing that a global brand like IKEA has not taken a solution-oriented approach throughout this ordeal. At no point during the sale was I informed of the fabric’s tendency to pill. Furthermore, the product comes with a two-year warranty. In line with my statutory consumer rights, I request that the product be repaired—meaning the fabric replaced free of charge with one that does not pill. If not, I hereby state that I will pursue my legal rights to the fullest extent.
