As a US sports enthusiast, I have never been a huge soccer fan, but my young children and I were genuinely excited to follow this World Cup and give the sport a real chance. However, the constant simulation by players, combined with refereeing decisions like this one, makes it extremely difficult to enjoy the games or take the competition seriously. If FIFA is serious about growing the sport, particularly in the American market, it urgently needs to address these harmful aspects of the game. I expect FIFA to acknowledge the seriousness of this situation, to transparently review this particular red card decision, and to consider creating or strengthening processes that allow clear mis-calls to be corrected after the fact. Implementing robust mechanisms to preserve fairness and integrity in key matches is essential if FIFA wants fans like me, and especially our children, to keep engaging with and supporting this sport.
