Economy Bookings Unjustified Extra Charge For Insurance
I rented a car from Green Motion at Lisbon Airport, Portugal, with a reservation I had made in advance through Economy Bookings under booking number B73248438. The rental period was from 8 June 2026 to 18 June 2026 for a total of 10 days. During the booking process I had already paid for insurance, and I went to pick up the vehicle with the clear understanding that the insurance was fully covered. At the counter on 8 June 2026, Green Motion stated that I had to pay an additional insurance fee, otherwise they would not give me the car. The reason they cited for this extra charge was that I could not physically produce the Mastercard with which I had made the reservation on Economy Bookings. I explained that I had had to cancel this card the day before, because I had been a victim of fraud by a Lisbon taxi driver, who charged me €1,200 for a €12 trip. I even filed a complaint with the Polícia de Segurança Pública under NPP: 271690/2026 and NUIPC: 001449/26.4 P8LSB. Despite this, Green Motion refused to release the car based on the Google Pay cards on my phone or the physical credit card of my wife, who was standing next to me. At the same time, they had no problem charging that very same Google Pay card for the extra €635 insurance and my wife's card for the €300 deposit. I felt forced to accept this situation, because I needed the vehicle and was not given any real alternative. As a result, I was charged an additional €635 for insurance at the time of pick-up, despite having already paid for insurance when making the reservation. This extra charge is linked to Green Motion rental agreement number 180898. I consider this practice unacceptable, as I had already purchased insurance through Economy Bookings and should not have been obliged to pay a second, very high insurance fee under the threat of not receiving the car I had booked. I request a full refund of the €635 insurance charge that was added at pick-up and a clear explanation of why this situation occurred despite my prior payment. I kindly ask Green Motion and, if applicable, Economy Bookings to review my reservation and rental agreement, investigate this double insurance charge and the way I was treated at the counter, and refund the full amount of €635 that was unjustly collected.
