Bio-Oil Pregnancy Safety Concerns Over Vitamin A Ingredient
I used Bio-Oil Skincare Oil for approximately one month to moisturize my abdomen and help prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. Because it was very clearly visible that I was pregnant, I specifically asked the seller to recommend a product that I could safely apply to my abdomen during pregnancy and that would help prevent stretch marks. I was specifically told that Bio-Oil is widely used during pregnancy for this purpose, and this was the product I was given. In addition, even a brief search on social media and online makes it possible to see that the product is commonly presented and perceived as a product recommended for pregnant women, creating the impression that it is suitable for use during pregnancy.
After using the product for some time, I carefully reviewed its ingredients and noticed that it contains a vitamin A/retinoid-related ingredient. There are warnings regarding the use of certain vitamin A derivatives during pregnancy because of potential risks to fetal development. Despite this, the product is marketed in a way that can make it appear suitable for preventing stretch marks during pregnancy, while there is no clear and prominent warning on the packaging regarding pregnancy use. It may have been my responsibility to check the ingredients before using the product, but I still cannot accept the fact that this product was recommended to me so casually and almost as if it were specifically a “pregnancy product,” without the company taking steps to clearly correct or prevent this perception.
I believe that a company should be much more transparent and careful when its product is being used during such a sensitive period as pregnancy. I request that clear, prominent, and easy-to-understand warnings regarding the vitamin A derivative in the product and its use during pregnancy be included on the product packaging and promotional materials. I also request that the marketing language be revised so that it does not mislead or create an inaccurate impression among pregnant consumers.
I expect the company to take responsibility for this issue, make the necessary corrections, and take immediate precautions to prevent other expectant mothers from experiencing the same concern.
