Traveling with a firearm on American Airlines requires special rules. What to know and do before arriving at the airport:
• Check State and Country Laws: State and country firearm laws vary. Before you go, check the firearm laws in your destination.
• International Travel: If you're traveling internationally or using another carrier, contact American Airlines Reservations to learn about your trip's requirements.
• Age Requirement: US passengers over 18 can bring pellet and BB guns and ammunition.
• When traveling with firearms, check them with an agent at check-in. Inform the airline of your firearms and ammunition.
-Firearms must be empty.
-Lock them in a hard-sided container that keeps the firearm out of reach. Cable locks are prohibited.
-Each end of rifle case must be locked.
The manufacturer's packaging or packaging designed for small amounts of ammunition must be used. This packaging should be fiber, wood, or metal.
The maximum ammunition allowance per container or customer is 11 pounds (5 kilograms). Not accepted: loose ammunition or magazines or clips.
TSA Guidelines: For more information, watch the TSA Traveling with Firearms video.
Allowance: You can carry any number of items in your rifle, shotgun, or pistol case, but bag and oversize/overweight fees may apply.

If you have questions about American Airlines' firearm policies, contact them.
